MARSHAL / PRACTICAL GUIDE
What changes the cost of a business website?
A website quote is only useful when you know what it covers. A short service site, a product catalogue and an online store can look similar in a screenshot while requiring different work. Here is how to prepare a comparable brief before asking for a price.
Prepare your website brief ↗List page types, not just a page count
Ten nearly identical product pages are a different job from ten individually designed pages. List the types you need: homepage, service pages, product categories, product detail, contact and any account screens. Identify which layouts can repeat and which need separate design.
Count the content work
Tell the provider whether text, photography and product information are ready. A catalogue may need categories and attributes cleaned up before the pages can be populated. Decide who supplies, enters and checks that information. The quote should not leave both sides assuming the other is doing it.
Separate browsing from transactions
Product discovery, enquiry forms, appointment booking, accounts and checkout have different requirements. List the essential action and the systems it depends on. If a payment service or existing business system is involved, name it in the brief instead of treating it as a small detail to add later.
Clarify access and ongoing costs
Ask about domain and hosting control, third-party subscriptions, content updates and ongoing support. Compare the initial build separately from recurring services. A lower initial number is not a useful comparison if it excludes work another proposal includes.
Agree what a change means
Write down the functions required for the first launch and which ideas can wait. Discuss how additional pages, integrations or a change in design direction affect the scope. This makes the conversation concrete without relying on a generic price-per-page rule.
Ask for a quote against the same brief
Send your purpose, audience, page types, available content, required functions and desired launch date. Ask each provider to state inclusions, exclusions and responsibilities. Marshal discusses pricing and timing for the particular project; this guide does not publish a universal price range.
Before we start
Why is there no single price here?
Pages, functions, content and connections vary between projects. A scope-specific estimate is more useful than a number that assumes work you may not need or leaves out work you do.
