MARSHAL / PRACTICAL GUIDE
What should you send a mobile app developer?
“Build an app for my business” leaves the important decisions open. A useful brief explains who uses it, what they need to complete and what information or systems make that possible. You do not need a technical specification to start, but a clear task helps.
Discuss your website or app brief ↗Name the user and the action
Describe one type of user and a task they need to complete. For example, a buyer may need to find a product in a catalogue. Then explain what they must know at each step. Keep different users separate if a customer and a team member need different access.
List the launch essentials
Separate the functions that make the first version useful from features that can wait. Screens, accounts, notifications, payments and reporting should each have a reason. A longer feature list is not automatically a better product brief.
Explain devices and connectivity
Tell the developer the devices your users have and whether the task must work in a browser, in an installed app or with limited connectivity. Treat platform support as a decision to confirm for your project, not a feature inferred from a phone-shaped demo.
Describe data and existing systems
List product information or other records the app needs, where they are maintained and who can change them. Mention current systems and any connections required. Avoid sending passwords, private customer records or other sensitive data in an initial enquiry.
Show references and define what matters
Reference apps can help explain navigation or a particular flow. Identify what you like and what you do not need. In Marshal’s showcase, the Falcon guest preview demonstrates actual interface screens; four other examples are labelled studio demos.
Finish with constraints, not a promised deadline
Include the desired launch date, content readiness and essential responsibilities. Pricing and timing can then be discussed against the scope. Save ambitious future ideas in a separate list so they do not obscure the first useful version.
